“Make him the Barley Water Elixir drink!”
This quote is from an old English book on rules for keeping a wholesome house. But Barley Water remains an elixir for what ails you. Here are the basics:
Barley has a variety of health benefits to hair, skin, bladder and kidney. It contains fiber, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals. All the good stuff.
Add the ginger, turmeric and vitamin c packed citrus and you have a cleansing, vitamin rich health elixir when your immune system needs a boost.
Barley Water Elixir Drink
Ingredients
1/4 cup barley
8 cups water
Turmeric: 1 scant teaspoon
fresh Ginger: 4 quarter sized slices
Juice of 1/2 grape fruit
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Juice of 1/2 lime
Sweeten with organic raw honey (Manuka would be great)
What to do:
Rinse barley and place along with turneric and ginger in a medium pot with the water.
Bring to a boil over high heat.
Reduce heat. cover the pot and simmer for 4 to 6 hours, or longer.
Remove from heat, strain, add the fruit juices and honey to taste.
Serve it warm.
